Here’s why and what you need to know about our vision and research for 6G.
By Dr. John E. Smee, Senior V, Engineering, Qualcomm Technologies | OnQ Blog | On 29 November 2022
"2022 has been an exciting year for mobile communications. Not only was the third 5G standard — 3GPP Release 17 — successfully completed bringing many 5G innovations, but the work on 5G Advanced has also officially begun. Through the rest of this decade, 5G Advanced will continue to improve end-to-end system performance, bring new efficiencies, and proliferate 5G into more devices and use cases. More importantly, 5G Advanced is establishing the technical foundation for 6G — the next-generation mobile platform coming in 2030 and beyond,” outlines Dr. John E. Smee, Senior V, Engineering, Qualcomm Technologies.

Development of “IMT Vision for 2030 and beyond” from ITU-R WP 5D
By Alan Weissberger | IEEE Communications Society Blog | On JUN 15, 2021
No organization, standards or spec writing body have detailed anything real related to “6G.” All the 6G claims from telecom equipment vendors and network operators are pure propaganda/hype. There is no consensus of what 6G will be, nor is there any effort to standardize “5G Advanced.” Hence, there is no basis whatsoever to talk about standardized 5G Advanced or 6G anytime soon.[...]
Key objectives of the Vision towards IMT for 2030 and beyond are discussed: (1) focus on continued need for increased coverage, increased capacity and extremally high user data rates;(2) focus on continued need for lower latency and both high and low speed of movement of the mobile terminals; (3) fully support the development of a Ubiquitous Intelligent Mobile Society; (4) focus on tackling societal challenges identified in UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), in particular to meet the needs of Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure; (5) consider what the future heterogenous mobile broadband networks can offer to the society and the economy through the applications and services they support; (6) target the changing global scenario on how we work and how we stay safe during the societal challenges such COVID-19 pandemic and global climate changes; and (7) focus on delivering on digital inclusion and connecting the rural and remote communities.
The 4 key pillars for the vision are presented on this post: (1°) any future technology should help in the development of a Ubiquitous Intelligent Mobile Connected Society; (2°) any future technology should support technologies that can help bridge the digital divide; (3°) any future technology should support technologies that can Personalize / localize services; and (4°) any future technology should support the connectivity / compute technologies that can address issues of real-world data ownership sensitivities.

Paper - NGMN 6G DRIVERS AND VISION
By Staff | NGMN Alliance | On 22.02.2022
In this paper, the NGMN MNOs, with input from NGMN Partners (vendors, research institutions), outline their vision for 6G representing a future evolution of networks enabling differentiated services with expanded market opportunities and novel experience. It first describes the drivers for 6G, and the key necessities to guide the future technologies to respond to the needs of the end users, societies, and MNOs. This is followed with NGMN’s vision of 6G, its novelty and capabilities to meet the drivers identified.
We discuss a number of fundamental aspects, including new scope and approach, that need to be considered in design and development of the next generation of standards and technologies. Furthermore, we recommend that research and the development of future ecosystems prioritize the key gaps and challenges discussed in this paper.

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces [Wireless Future Podcast
By Emil Björnson and Erik G. Larsson | Unköping University | 2020
The research towards 6G has already been initiated. One of the most hyped concepts in the research community is “reconfigurable intelligent surfaces”, which can be utilized to create smart walls that capture wireless signals and reflect them towards the user device. In this episode, Erik G. Larsson and Emil Björnson discuss the prospects and limitations of this new technology. Is it the next big thing in wireless? To learn more, they recommend their new overview article “Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces: Three Myths and Two Critical Questions”, to appear in IEEE Communications Magazine, which can be downloaded at https://arxiv.org/pdf/2006.03377.

OULU - 6G Flagship Project - The overarching goals of 6G Flagship are: (1°) support industry in finalization of 5G; (2°) develop the fundamental technology needed to enable 6G; and (3°) speed up digitalization in society. (University of Oulu, Finland)
Hexa-X Project - The 6G flagship initiative Hexa-X has been established, by bringing together the key industry stakeholders, along with the full value-chain of future connectivity solutions ranging from network vendors, operators, verticals, and technology providers (e.g., software and Internet of Things (IoT) solutions), as well as the most prominent European research institutes and universities in this domain, streamlining expert forces and creating a critical mass to lead an integrated effort of research and development towards 6G. The project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme.
one6G - The one6G Association aims to evolve, test and promote next generation cellular and wireless technology-based communications solutions. By supporting global 6G research and standardization efforts, the goal is to accelerate its adoption and overall market penetration, while addressing societal and industry-driven needs for enhanced connected mobility. This with the ambition to speed up the development of new services and applications in domains such as advanced autonomous driving, advanced manufacturing, advanced wireless e-health, remote education etc.
5G/6GIC - The 5G/6G Innovation Centre (5G/6GIC) is part of the Institute for Communication Systems (ICS). Founded and Directed by Professor Barry Evans, who leads satellite communications research activities at Surrey.
3gpp - The 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) unites seven telecommunications standard development organizations (ARIB, ATIS, CCSA, ETSI, TSDSI, TTA, TTC), known as “Organizational Partners” providing their members with a stable environment to produce the Reports and Specifications that define 3GPP technologies. 3GPP develops specifications which cover cellular telecommunications technologies, including radio access, core network and service capabilities, which provide a complete system description for mobile telecommunications. The 3GPP specifications also provide hooks for non-radio access to the core network, and for interworking with non-3GPP networks.
The 3GPP technologies are constantly evolving through Generations of commercial cellular/mobile systems. With LTE and 5G work, 3GPP has become the focal point for the vast majority of mobile systems beyond 3G. Although these Generations have become an adequate descriptor for the type of network under discussion, real progress on 3GPP standards is measured by the milestones achieved in particular Releases. New features are ’functionality frozen’ and are ready for implementation when a Release is completed.
